Core words

These words appear often in beginner conversations. Keep definitions simple at first, then add precision as learning deepens.

  • Shahada: the testimony of faith and verbal entry into Islam.
  • Sunnah: the Prophet's way, including things he taught, did, or approved.
  • Halal: permitted or allowed.
  • Haram: forbidden or sinful.
  • Wudu: ritual washing before prayer.
  • Ghusl: full ritual washing in major purification situations.

Prayer words

Prayer has its own vocabulary. A new Muslim does not need to master every term on day one, but recognizing the words lowers anxiety.

  • Adhan: the call to prayer.
  • Rak'ah: one unit or cycle of prayer.
  • Qibla: the direction faced in prayer.
  • Fajr or Subh: dawn prayer terminology used differently in some communities.
  • Watr and Tahajjud: voluntary night prayers learned after the basics.

Ramadan and pilgrimage words

Some terms become relevant later, especially around Ramadan and travel for worship.

  • Laylat al-Qadr: a special night in Ramadan connected to Quran and worship.
  • Hajj: the major pilgrimage to Mecca for those able.
  • Umrah: the lesser pilgrimage.
  • Mahram: a close unmarriageable relative or guardian category relevant in some travel and gender-boundary discussions.
